MARTA East Lake Station North Pedestrian Bridge Replacement

Project Scope

As part of a five-year contract with MARTA for multiple station rehabilitation projects, this project included the deconstruction and removal of the old East Lake Station North Pedestrian bridge and the installation of the new bridge. The project also included the installation of a new elevator, parking lot enhancements such as resurfacing and striping, ADA improvements, new lighting, and the addition of advanced surveillance cameras. The second phase of improvements will include the installation of a new bridge on the South side.

Location:

Client:

MARTA (Metro Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority)

When the transit is rapid, how do you ensure safety without being slow?

Challenge Faced

Having been open since 1979, MARTA’s East Lake Station was in need of major repairs to better serve commuters and enable safe transit operations and full accessibility for all riders. With its proximity to the active MARTA railway, significant safety protocols had to be put in place in order to maintain commuter safety and vehicular safety while work was being completed.

Solution Provided

The majority of the bridge removal and replacement work was performed with multiple crews in one day and one night in order to minimize disruptions and mitigate safety risks. This required meticulous planning and coordination with MARTA as well as all equipment suppliers and installation teams. The work was completed safely and without incident.
